About the author

Born in Pälkäne in 1865, Severi Nuormaa was a Finnish poet, lyricist, journalist, and popular educator. He was known as Severi Nyman until 1906, and his work moved easily between literature, newspapers, and civic life.

Nuormaa is remembered as an early pioneer of adult and folk education in Finland. He led Hämeen kansanopisto, then became the first director of the Tampere Workers' Institute when it was founded in 1899, and later also directed the Workers' Institute in Turku. Alongside that work, he built a substantial career in journalism and served as editor for several newspapers.

His writing reflected both cultural idealism and a practical belief in education as a path to wider opportunity. He died in Turku in 1924, leaving behind a varied legacy as a man of letters and a public-minded educator.
