Best known as the company behind 7UP in the United States, this soft-drink business became part of a bigger beverage story through mergers, brand deals, and changing ownership. Its history captures how one lemon-lime soda brand grew from a Depression-era launch into a lasting name in American drinks.

by Seven-Up Company
The Seven-Up Company traces its roots to Charles Leiper Grigg, who created the drink that became 7UP and introduced it in 1928. Grigg’s business, originally the Howdy Corporation, was later renamed The Seven-Up Company in 1936, helping turn the brand into a recognizable name in lemon-lime soda.
A major turning point came in 1986, when The 7 Up Company and Dr Pepper, Inc. were brought together, creating Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., a soft-drink company based in Plano, Texas. That merger helped shape the brand’s modern identity in the United States and tied 7UP’s story to a broader portfolio of well-known beverage brands.
Today, the brand’s ownership is split by region: Keurig Dr Pepper owns 7UP in the United States, while PepsiCo holds rights in many international markets. Even though the original company changed form over time, the Seven-Up name remains closely linked with one of America’s classic clear sodas.
