About the author

Sepharial was the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, born on March 20, 1864, in Handsworth, England, and died on December 23, 1929, in Hove. He was an English astrologer and a member of the Theosophical movement, and sources note that he was active in the early Theosophical Society before building a long career as a writer and astrologer.

He is remembered mainly for making astrology accessible to ordinary readers. Listings of his work show a substantial body of writing, including The New Manual of Astrology, Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope, and Cosmic Symbolism, alongside editorial and translation work.

His reputation has lasted well beyond his lifetime, especially among readers interested in astrology, esotericism, and the late Victorian and early 20th-century occult revival. Under the name Sepharial, he became one of the better-known popular astrological authors of his era.
