1778–1863
A Bavarian priest and local historian, he devoted much of his life to uncovering the stories of towns, churches, and noble families in Upper Bavaria. His writing preserves a close-up view of regional history from the early 19th century.
Born on August 19, 1778, in Neunburg vorm Wald, he was baptized Wolfgang Dachauer. After finishing school in Munich, he entered the Augustinian order in 1798, took the name Sebastian, studied theology, and was ordained a priest in 1801.
He first served as a curate in Aufkirchen and later became a school benefice priest in Brannenburg. There he turned deeply toward the history of the upper Inn valley and the Rosenheim area, combining his work in the church with a lasting interest in local archives, places, and traditions.
He published many studies on Upper Bavarian history, most of them in the Oberbayerisches Archiv. His works include local chronicles, church and castle histories, and a two-volume chronicle of his native town of Neunburg vorm Wald, written with his brother Gottfried. He died on February 24, 1863, in Fischbach am Inn and was buried in Brannenburg at his own request.
