Sebastian Brant

1458–1521

Best known for The Ship of Fools, this sharp-eyed satirist turned late medieval anxieties into lively, memorable writing. His work became one of the most widely read German books of the 15th century and still feels surprisingly modern in its humor and moral bite.

About the author

Born in Strasbourg around 1457 or 1458, Sebastian Brant was a German humanist, satirist, and legal scholar. He studied in Basel, earned a doctorate in law, and later taught there before returning to Strasbourg, where he served in important civic offices.

Brant is most famous for Das Narrenschiff (The Ship of Fools), published in 1494. The book uses a parade of foolish characters to mock vanity, greed, and other human failings, blending moral seriousness with wit and vivid storytelling. It became an enormous success and was one of the best-known literary works in German at the end of the 15th century.

Alongside his writing, Brant was part of the wider humanist culture of his age, bringing together scholarship, public life, and satire. He died in Strasbourg on May 10, 1521, but his best-known work continued to influence readers, artists, and later writers for centuries.
