About the author

Born in Strasbourg in 1458, Sebastian Brant studied law at the University of Basel and later taught there. He was a scholar, lawyer, and civic official as well as a writer, moving comfortably between university life and public service.

Brant is remembered above all for The Ship of Fools (Das Narrenschiff), published in 1494. The book strings together portraits of different kinds of fools to mock human weakness, moral blindness, and social pretension, and it quickly spread across Europe in translation.

Later in life he returned to Strasbourg, where he served in important municipal roles. Though deeply rooted in the learning of his time, his most famous work still feels lively because it mixes moral seriousness with humor, memorable images, and a clear eye for everyday folly.
