About the author

Born in 1839 at Edge Hill in Albemarle County, Virginia, Sarah Nicholas Randolph grew up in one of the state’s most prominent families and was a great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson. She was educated at home and at the Patapsco Female Institute, and her writing drew deeply on family papers, local memory, and Virginia history.

Randolph is best remembered for works such as The Domestic Life of Thomas Jefferson, The Life of General Thomas J. Jackson, and Recollections of a Southern Daughter. Her books helped preserve personal details about Jefferson and his circle, while also reflecting how a Southern writer of her era understood the Civil War and its aftermath.

She died in 1892. Today, her work remains useful not only for its storytelling, but also because it gathers family traditions and historical material that later readers and researchers have continued to consult.
