Born in Waterbury on January 11, 1830, Sarah J. Prichard was an American author remembered for both her fiction and her historical writing. Sources describe her as a Waterbury native who studied at the Waterbury Academy and later at the Willard Seminary in Troy, New York, before beginning to publish in the 1850s.

Her early work included children's stories and novels such as Martha's Hooks and Eyes, Nat's Shoes, The Old Stone Chimney, and Rose Marbury. She is also associated with The Wonderful Christmas in Pumpkin Delight Lane, and later became especially known for her long research work on The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut (1896), a major local history.

Prichard spent much of her life closely connected to her native city, and local historical sources remember her as one of Waterbury's prominent literary women. She died on February 23, 1909.
