About the author

Born in Bristol, England, in 1828, she came to the United States as a child and grew up in a family deeply involved in reform and education. She was the younger sister of physician Elizabeth Blackwell and physician Emily Blackwell, and she also studied art before building a literary career of her own.

She wrote biography, history, and criticism, and is especially known for A Military Genius: Life of Anna Ella Carroll of Maryland, a major work arguing for Carroll's importance in the Civil War era. She also wrote Eminent Women in Medicine and Surgery, reflecting her long interest in women's achievements and public service.

Her work fits naturally beside the wider Blackwell family legacy: practical, reform-minded, and determined to make women's contributions visible. She died in 1901, leaving behind books that still attract readers interested in women's history, medicine, and nineteenth-century social change.
