About the author

Born in Bogotá in 1858, he spent much of his life abroad and built a reputation as a writer, journalist, and speaker. He is best remembered today for Down the Orinoco in a Canoe, a travel narrative that drew on his experience exploring South America.

He also became known for his political and cultural essays. Contemporary reference sources describe him as an advocate of Pan-American cooperation and as a voice against European intervention in the Americas, showing how closely his literary work and public life were connected.

Pérez Triana died in 1916. Though less widely read now than some of his contemporaries, he remains an interesting figure for readers drawn to travel writing, Latin American intellectual history, and the international debates of his time.
