About the author

Born in Kétegyháza on March 27, 1853, Sándor Márki studied history and geography at the University of Budapest, earned his doctorate soon after, and went on to build a life in scholarship and teaching. He became known as a historian, historical writer, and professor whose work focused especially on Hungarian and Transylvanian history.

Márki spent an important part of his career at the university in Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca), where he taught history and became a notable academic figure. He was elected to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, first as a corresponding member and later as a full member, reflecting the regard he earned among his contemporaries.

He remained active late into life, later teaching in Szeged after the university’s move there. Márki died in Gödöllő on July 1, 1925, leaving behind a substantial body of historical writing that helped shape how earlier generations read the history of Hungary and Transylvania.
