Born in Bakhmut, in what is now Ukraine, Samuel Spewack came to New York as a child and later studied at Columbia. He began as a journalist and foreign correspondent, experience that gave his writing a brisk, observant style and a feel for character.
He is most often remembered for his partnership with his wife, Bella Spewack. Together they wrote plays, screenplays, and musicals, becoming one of the notable husband-and-wife teams in American entertainment. Their best-known success is Kiss Me, Kate, the Cole Porter musical for which they wrote the book.
Along with theater, Spewack also worked in film and directed some of the plays he helped create. His career moved easily between journalism, Broadway, and Hollywood, and his work remains tied to the smart, fast-moving comedy of its era.
