About the author

Born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1881, Samuel James Record studied at Wabash College before earning a Master of Forestry degree from Yale. He later joined the Yale School of Forestry faculty, where he became known for his teaching, research, and leadership in the study of forest products and wood anatomy.

Record played a major role in building Yale’s wood collection and was widely respected for his knowledge of tropical timbers. He published books and studies on trees and wood that were valued not just by botanists, but also by foresters and industries that relied on accurate identification of timber.

In 1939 he became dean of Yale’s forestry school. He died in 1945, but his influence continued through the collections he helped develop and the scientific approach he brought to the study of wood.
