About the author

Much of Samuel John Milton Brown’s early life was shaped by Liverpool docks, where he studied ships and their rigging in close detail. Born in Liverpool on April 13, 1873, he was apprenticed to a firm of lithographic artists at fourteen and later studied at the Liverpool School of Art under John Finnie.

Brown built a reputation as a maritime painter whose pictures of clippers, liners, and working vessels reflected both technical accuracy and a strong sense of atmosphere. He exhibited regularly at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, and his work was also shown by the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Society of British Artists, and other regional galleries.

He is also associated with shipping poster design, particularly for Cunard, and has been described as the company’s official artist. For readers who enjoy sea stories, travel history, or old port cities, his background gives his work an immediate authenticity and charm.
