About the author

Born in Boston in 1841, Samuel Franklin Emmons studied at Harvard and then continued his training at mining schools in Paris and Freiberg. He went on to become an important geologist in the exploration of the American West, joining Clarence King's survey of the fortieth parallel and later working with the United States Geological Survey.

Emmons became especially known for his work on mining geology and ore deposits, including influential studies of Colorado's Leadville district. His research helped shape early economic geology in the United States, and he was widely respected for combining scientific rigor with practical knowledge of mining regions.

He died in 1911, but his reputation endured through his reports, maps, and scientific leadership. Readers interested in geology, mining history, and the scientific exploration of the American West will find in his work a clear window into a crucial era of discovery.
