About the author

Samuel Arthur Derieux was an American writer born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1881. Reliable reference sources identify him especially with short stories set in the South, often focused on dogs, hunting, or both.

He studied at Wofford College and later at Richmond College, now the University of Richmond, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1904. His fiction reached a wide readership in the early 20th century, and his name is also associated with Frank of Freedom Hill, which has remained available through Project Gutenberg.

Derieux died in New York in 1922, at only 40 years old. Even with a short life, he left behind a clear literary identity: warm, vivid storytelling rooted in Southern settings and an evident affection for animals.
