About the author

Born in Ristijärvi on November 15, 1873, Matti Salomo Pulkkinen was a Finnish farmer, writer, and politician. He is remembered as a kansankirjailija—a popular or folk writer—whose work drew on everyday life, local memory, and the people of northern Finland.

Pulkkinen wrote books including Tervanpolttajat: Ynnä muita kertomuksia pohjan periltä and Ristijärven muistoja ja kuvauksia, which reflect his strong connection to his home region. His writing is closely tied to Kainuu and to the traditions, landscapes, and ordinary experiences of rural communities.

Alongside his literary work, he served as a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1911 to 1916, representing the Agrarian League. He died in Ristijärvi on December 2, 1952, leaving behind a body of work shaped by the place and people he knew best.
