About the author

Born in Seattle on January 28, 1924, she went on to study at Reed College and became known for historical novels for young readers. Her best-known work is the English Family Tree series, a multigenerational saga linking England, Scotland, and early America, though she also wrote novels set in ancient Egypt and early Israel, along with two memoirs.

Her life was as full as her fiction. During World War II she served in the WAVES, studying radio engineering, and later traveled widely. Readers and publishers alike have noted the care she brought to historical detail, as well as her gift for creating bold, independent young women at the center of her stories.

Although many of her books went out of print for a time, devoted fans helped keep her work alive, and several were reissued years later. She died on March 11, 2022, leaving behind a body of work that still feels inviting to readers who love history, adventure, and strong characters.
