About the author

Born in Antioch in the 4th century, John Chrysostom became famous for his powerful preaching and close reading of the Bible. The nickname "Chrysostom" means "golden-mouthed," a sign of how strongly listeners responded to his eloquence. After years shaped by study, ascetic life, and ministry in Antioch, he was made archbishop of Constantinople.

In that role he preached boldly against corruption, luxury, and the abuse of power, which won him admirers but also dangerous enemies. His clashes with influential church and imperial figures led to exile more than once, and he died in 407 while still under harsh treatment.

He is honored as a saint in both Eastern and Western Christianity and is widely regarded as one of the greatest preachers of the early Church. Readers still turn to his homilies and biblical commentaries for their energy, moral seriousness, and practical concern for ordinary people.
