A Burgundian noblewoman who became a widow, mother, and eventually a religious founder, she is remembered for turning deep personal loss into a life of faith and practical compassion. With Saint Francis de Sales, she helped establish the Order of the Visitation, a community shaped by humility, gentleness, and care for others.

by Saint Jeanne-Françoise de Chantal
Born in Dijon in 1572, Jeanne-Françoise Frémiot de Chantal grew up in a prominent family in Burgundy. She married Baron Christophe de Rabutin and had several children, but her life changed dramatically when her husband died after a hunting accident, leaving her a widow while still relatively young.
Her friendship with Saint Francis de Sales became one of the defining relationships of her life. Guided by his spiritual counsel, she moved toward religious life, and in 1610 they founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary at Annecy. The community became known for a gentle, accessible spirit and for welcoming women who might not have fit the stricter expectations of other orders.
She spent the rest of her life helping the order grow and shaping its spiritual character. Jeanne-Françoise de Chantal died in 1641, and she was later canonized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Her legacy endures through the Visitation communities and through her example of resilience, devotion, and steady charity.
