About the author

Born on August 21, 1567, in the Duchy of Savoy, Francis de Sales was educated in Paris and Padua and eventually became Bishop of Geneva, working mainly from Annecy during a time of sharp religious conflict. He became known not only for his learning, but for a calm, gracious style that set him apart.

Rather than arguing harshly, he wrote and preached with patience and clarity. His best-known books, Introduction to the Devout Life and Treatise on the Love of God, helped ordinary readers see that deep spiritual life was not only for monks or clergy, but could be lived in everyday work and family life.

He also worked closely with Jane Frances de Chantal in founding the Order of the Visitation. Francis de Sales died on December 28, 1622, and was later named a Doctor of the Church. He is often remembered as a patron of writers and journalists, fitting for an author whose kindness and plainspoken wisdom still reach readers today.
