About the author

Born Georgius Florentius around 538 in Clermont in Gaul, Gregory came from a prominent Gallo-Roman Christian family and later became bishop of Tours in 573. As bishop, he served in one of the most important religious centers in Merovingian Gaul, closely linked with the shrine of Saint Martin.

He is best known for the Ten Books of Histories, often called the History of the Franks, a work that became a major source for understanding 6th-century Frankish politics, society, and church life. Because he wrote so close to the events he described, his work remains especially valuable to historians.

Gregory also wrote about saints, miracles, and the spiritual life of his time, showing how strongly he believed history and faith belonged together. He is often remembered not only as a bishop and saint, but also as one of the earliest and most important historians of medieval France.
