About the author

Born in Prague on March 8, 1825, he was the son of a Jewish merchant and studied at the local university in the 1840s. He later worked in the family business and became its sole proprietor before turning fully to literature in the 1870s.

He is generally remembered as an Austrian novelist from Prague who wrote in German and became especially associated with fiction about Jewish history, tradition, and ghetto life. Reference works note that his novels were widely read, reprinted often, and translated into several languages, which suggests he reached a broad audience in his own time.

He died in Prague on November 6, 1904. While not as widely known today as some later Central European writers, he remains an interesting figure in 19th-century German-Jewish literature, especially for readers curious about popular historical fiction and the literary culture of Prague.
