About the author

Born in Moscow in 1879, Sergei Petrovich Melgunov was a Russian historian, publicist, editor, and political figure. He is best known for writing about the Russian Revolution and Civil War, and for his strong opposition to Bolshevik rule. His work combined historical research with the voice of an engaged witness to a country in upheaval.

Melgunov was active in public life before and after 1917, and later lived in emigration after leaving Soviet Russia. In exile, he continued to write extensively, producing books and articles that examined revolutionary violence, political persecution, and the fate of Russia after the fall of the old order. Readers often come to him for firsthand-era accounts shaped by both scholarship and conviction.

He died in France in 1956. For many readers today, Melgunov remains a valuable guide to the human and political dramas of early twentieth-century Russia, especially for the way he preserved voices, events, and arguments that might otherwise have been lost.
