About the author

Born in Zürich in 1853, Susanna Louise Patteson later made her life in the United States and became an American citizen in the 1890s. Alongside her writing, she worked as a stenographer and educator, giving her a background that was both literary and practical.

She wrote several books for young readers and families, including Pussy Meow: The Autobiography of a Cat, Letters from Pussycatville, How to Have Bird Neighbors, and When I Was a Girl in Switzerland. Her animal books were especially appealing for their gentle humor and close observation, and she even used her own photographs to help illustrate some of them.

Patteson died in 1922, but her books still stand out for their charm and sincerity. She wrote in a way that made animals feel like companions and everyday experiences feel worth noticing, which helps her work remain inviting to modern listeners and readers.
