About the author

Born in Arendal in 1866, Simon Christian Hammer became part of Norway’s literary and journalistic life at a time when newspapers were a major force in public debate. Reliable reference sources describe him as both a writer and a journalist, and note that he completed his cand. philol. degree in 1890.

He went on to serve as editor-in-chief of Stavangeren in the 1890s and later worked for several important Norwegian newspapers and magazines, including Farmand, Verdens Gang, and Tidens Tegn. Sources also note that he was the Norwegian correspondent for The Times from 1917 until his death in 1932, showing how closely his work connected Norwegian affairs with a wider European audience.

Alongside his journalism, Hammer published nonfiction and historical works. He is especially remembered as a writer who brought together literary interests, current affairs, and history in a clear, public-facing way.
