About the author

Born in Alabama in 1834, he was orphaned young, worked as a store clerk in Huntsville, and began studying law in 1858. He moved to Texas in 1860, settling in Rusk, where he built his legal career and later became active in public life.

During the Civil War, he served in the Third Texas Cavalry and rose from lieutenant to captain of Company C. After the war, he returned to law, served as county judge of Cherokee County, and later became judge of the judicial district centered at Rusk.

As an author, he is known for The Lone Star Defenders: A Chronicle of the Third Texas Cavalry, Ross' Brigade, a firsthand account of the regiment in which he served. He died in 1912 at Palestine, Texas.
