An English-born poet and journalist who built her career in Winnipeg before returning to England, she wrote with wit, warmth, and a sharp eye for everyday life. She also published under the pen names Wilhelmina Stitch and Sheila Rand, names that became widely recognized in newspapers and magazines.
Born Ruth Jacobs in Cambridge in November 1888, she later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where her writing career took shape. She began with book reviews for the Winnipeg Telegram and went on to become known for poems, short stories, and newspaper work.
She published under several names, including Wilhelmina Stitch and Sheila Rand, and built a broad readership on both sides of the Atlantic. Her work ranged from light verse to more reflective poetry, and contemporary accounts described her as one of the best-known women writers in the British Empire.
Later in life she remarried, moved to London, and died there on March 6, 1936. Today she is remembered as a British-Canadian literary figure whose lively, accessible writing still travels well to modern readers.
