About the author

Born in Braunschweig on September 27, 1850, Rudolph Rittmeyer served in the Imperial German Navy and eventually reached the rank of rear admiral. After his naval career, he became known as a writer of serious historical studies about warfare at sea.

His best-known work is Seekriege und Seekriegswesen, a multi-volume history of naval warfare. In it, he set out to explain how sea battles and naval strategy developed over time, with particular attention to the major conflicts of the 1600s and 1700s.

Rittmeyer died in Hanover on February 28, 1914. Though not a household name today, his books remain of interest to readers who enjoy naval history, military strategy, and large-scale historical analysis.
