About the author

Born on May 8, 1832, Rudolf Kneisel was the son of actors Wilhelm and Mathilde Kneisel, so the stage was part of his life from the beginning. Sources differ on whether he was born in Königsberg or Magdeburg, but they agree that he appeared onstage at a young age and grew up inside the world of traveling theater.

After engagements in places including Dresden, Altona, and Flensburg, he worked in Magdeburg as a director and dramaturge. In the early 1860s he led his own traveling theater company, and later became especially associated with Berlin, where he worked as an actor, playwright, and theater director.

Kneisel wrote plays and librettos, and one of his best-known credits is the book for Johann Strauss II’s 1878 operetta Blindekuh. He died on September 17, 1899, leaving behind a career shaped by practical theater work as much as by writing.
