About the author

Born on June 13, 1864, in Torsö, Sweden, Rudolf Kjellén became a political scientist, geographer, and conservative politician whose work would make him internationally known. He studied at Uppsala University, later taught there, and also held a professorship in Gothenburg before returning to Uppsala.

Kjellén is remembered above all for introducing the word "geopolitics" and for describing the state as something more dynamic than a legal structure alone. In books such as The Great Powers and The State as a Living Form, he explored how territory, population, economy, society, and government interact in shaping national power.

He also served in Swedish politics, linking academic theory with public debate. Although parts of his thinking were later taken up in troubling ways outside Sweden, his writing remains important for anyone interested in the history of political geography, international relations, and the origins of modern geopolitical thought.
