Born in Basel on March 30, 1866, Rudolf Burckhardt studied zoology in Basel, Leipzig, and Berlin. He earned his doctorate in Basel in 1889, then worked in Berlin before qualifying to teach at the University of Basel.
Burckhardt became an associate professor at Basel, where he taught paleontology, comparative anatomy, and vertebrate embryology. He was also connected with the biological station at Rovigno, reflecting his strong engagement with research as well as teaching.
He is remembered as a Swiss zoologist and paleontologist whose writings ranged from specialized scientific studies to a book on the history of zoology, published in 1907. He died in Rovigno on January 14, 1908, at just 41 years old.
