About the author

Born in Basel on March 30, 1866, Rudolf Burckhardt studied zoology in Basel, Leipzig, and Berlin, earning his doctorate in Basel in 1889. He later taught at the University of Basel, where he became an associate professor focused on paleontology, comparative anatomy, and vertebrate developmental history.

Burckhardt is remembered for combining several fields at once: comparative anatomy, neurology, paleontology, and the history of science. Sources describe him as an important contributor to evolutionary thought, and his writing reflects both detailed scientific training and a strong interest in how zoology developed over time.

In 1907 he took over the marine zoological station of the Berlin Aquarium in Rovigno, today Rovinj in Croatia. He died there on January 14, 1908, at just 41, leaving behind scientific studies as well as historical works such as Geschichte der Zoologie.
