About the author

Born in Augusta, Georgia, Ruby Lorraine Radford was an American author remembered for a large body of writing for younger readers. Reliable library and archival sources describe her as the author of more than 50 books, with many of them centered on juvenile adventure, mystery, biography, and Georgia history.

Before writing full time, she trained as a teacher, taught in Augusta public schools from 1912 to 1920, and later studied writing at Columbia University. Archival notes also credit her with several hundred short stories, serials, and plays, showing how active she was across different formats.

Radford often wrote strong female protagonists, and some of her books were published under the pen names Marcia Ford and Matilda Bailey. She remained closely connected to Augusta throughout her life and was recognized late in her career by the Dixie Council of Authors and Journalists.
