About the author

Born in Venice in 1866 and educated in England, Rosina Filippi built a career on the British stage before becoming known as an acting instructor and writer. She was the daughter of the Italian music critic Filippo Filippi, and her background in performance shaped much of her later work.

She is especially remembered for Duologues and Scenes from the Novels of Jane Austen (1895), an early and influential attempt to adapt Austen for performance. By turning familiar scenes into pieces for drawing-room theater, she helped introduce Austen’s characters to audiences in a new way.

Filippi also wrote on acting and speech, including Hints to Speakers and Players. She died in 1930, but her name still comes up in the history of Jane Austen adaptations and amateur theater.
