About the author

Roselle M. Girard was born in Austin, Texas, on December 5, 1918, and later earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in geology from the University of Texas. She spent most of her career with the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology, where her work combined research, public information, and practical writing for a broad audience.

She is best known for Texas Rocks and Minerals: An Amateur's Guide, first published in 1964. Written as a simple, helpful introduction for schoolchildren, amateur collectors, and new enthusiasts, the book reflects her gift for making geology approachable without talking down to the reader.

Girard also contributed to other geology publications and Texas mineral industry reports through the Bureau of Economic Geology. She died on December 17, 2012, but her writing continued to be read for decades afterward, especially by Texans discovering the subject for the first time.
