Born in Austin, Texas, on December 5, 1918, Roselle M. Girard studied geology at the University of Texas, where she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees. She later spent much of her career at the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas.
She is best known for Texas Rocks and Minerals: An Amateur's Guide, first published in 1964. The book was written as a simple, accessible introduction for schoolchildren, amateur collectors, and other newcomers interested in Texas geology, and it remained popular for decades.
Girard also compiled Bibliography and Index of Texas Geology, 1933–1950, reflecting her deep connection to geological research as well as public education. She died on December 17, 2012, at age 94.
