About the author

Born in Illinois in 1911, Ronald Reagan began his career in broadcasting before moving into films in Hollywood. He later became active in public life through union leadership and political campaigning, then served two terms as governor of California before winning the presidency in 1980.

Reagan was the 40th president of the United States, serving from 1981 to 1989. His presidency is remembered for a conservative economic agenda, a hard line against the Soviet Union paired with later negotiations, and major moments including surviving an assassination attempt in 1981 and winning reelection by a landslide in 1984.

After leaving office, he remained an important symbol in American political life. He died in 2004 at age 93, but his legacy continues to be discussed through his speeches, memoirs, and the major policy shifts associated with his name.
