About the author

Born in 1651, Roger North was an English lawyer and writer from a prominent family that included the Lord Keeper Francis North and the scholar and traveler John North. He studied at Cambridge and the Middle Temple, then practiced law, but he is remembered above all for the remarkable range of his writings.

North wrote biographies, memoirs, and works on music, architecture, and estate management. His best-known books include lives of his brothers and friends, and his writings are especially valued because they preserve vivid firsthand details about English society, politics, and culture during a time of major change.

He died in 1734. For many readers today, his appeal lies in the way he combines careful observation with a strong personal voice, making his work useful to historians while still feeling lively and human.
