About the author

Roger J. Contor was an American park writer and National Park Service employee whose published work includes The Underworld of Oregon Caves National Monument (1963). Contemporary “About the Author” notes for that book say he studied at the University of Idaho and Montana State College, focusing on zoology, botany, forestry, and big game management.

Those same notes describe a career that began as a seasonal National Park Service employee in Yellowstone in 1949. By 1955 he had joined the permanent staff as a park ranger, with service in Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, and Bryce Canyon National Parks; in 1960 he became management assistant at Oregon Caves National Monument, where he remained until early 1962.

Contor wrote in a practical, welcoming style shaped by firsthand park experience. His work on Oregon Caves blends natural history with plainspoken explanation, helping general readers understand how the monument’s underground world was formed and why it matters.
