Born on May 24, 1876, Roger Bigelow Merriman was an American historian who spent most of his academic life at Harvard University. He earned his degrees there after additional study at Balliol College, Oxford, and became known as part of a tradition of rigorous, research-driven history writing influenced by German scholarship.

Merriman is especially remembered for his multivolume work on the rise of the Spanish Empire, which made a large and complicated subject readable for students and general readers alike. Alongside his scholarship, he was also a well-known Harvard teacher and house master, roles that gave him a lasting reputation not just as a historian, but as an important presence in university life.

He died on September 7, 1945. Though not a household name today, he remains a notable figure in American historical writing for his serious, wide-ranging studies of imperial Spain and early modern Europe.
