Born in Leipzig on January 21, 1811, he was educated first at Grimma and later at the Thomasschule in Leipzig. Although he had been expected to study theology, he chose the stage instead and began performing in 1831 with the traveling company of H. E. Bethmann.
After working as an actor and singer in several theaters, he turned more fully to writing. His breakthrough came with the comedy Das bemooste Haupt in 1841, and he went on to become a notably productive writer of stage comedies and librettos. Reference works describe him as especially successful in light comic drama, and his collected dramatic works eventually filled many volumes.
He later served as director of the municipal theater in Frankfurt am Main, taking the post in 1855 before retiring in 1861. He died in Leipzig on September 26, 1873, remembered as a major figure in 19th-century German popular theater.
