About the author

Born in Tarrytown Heights, New York, in 1882, Rockwell Kent became one of the most recognizable American artists of the first half of the twentieth century. He studied architecture before turning seriously to art, training in New York and developing a style that combined strong design, clear forms, and a love of striking natural settings.

Kent is especially remembered for paintings, prints, and illustrations shaped by travel. Time spent in places such as Alaska, Newfoundland, Greenland, and the far south fed his fascination with remote landscapes, cold light, and human solitude. Alongside his studio work, he also wrote books and travel accounts, giving readers a fuller sense of the adventures behind the images.

His career stretched across many roles: painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, sailor, and public figure. That range helps explain why his work still feels so vivid—there is often a sense that the person making the image had truly gone out into the weather, the sea, and the wilderness he pictured.
