About the author

Born in Póvoa de Varzim in 1866, Rocha Peixoto was a Portuguese naturalist, ethnologist, archaeologist, and writer whose interests ranged widely across the natural sciences and the study of culture. He studied at the Polytechnic Academy of Porto and became known for treating local traditions and material culture as serious subjects of study.

He worked with the circle around Eça de Queiroz and served as secretary of Revista de Portugal. He also helped organize the Cabinet of Mineralogy, Geology, and Palaeontology of the Polytechnic Academy of Porto, showing the same practical energy in institutions that he brought to his writing.

Rocha Peixoto is remembered for helping shape modern Portuguese ethnography through careful observation and a strong sense that everyday life mattered. He died in 1909, but his books and studies still offer a vivid picture of Portugal's people, places, and inherited customs.
