Born on February 4, 1878, in the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area, he built a remarkably varied career as an author, naturalist, poet, local historian, horticulturalist, and editor. Collections and historical organizations in Chattanooga describe him as a lifelong student of the region, someone who found constant inspiration in its plants, animals, people, and past.

His surviving papers and library exhibits show the wide range of his interests and publications. He wrote books including Torchlights to the Cherokees, Animals on a City Lot, A Boy Like You, A Forest of Poems, and This Is Chattanooga, and his work helped preserve stories about Tennessee and the Cherokee past while also encouraging readers to pay closer attention to the natural world around them.

He died on September 26, 1960. Even decades later, local archives and cultural groups continue to preserve his manuscripts, photographs, and published work, reflecting the lasting place he holds in Chattanooga’s literary and natural history.
