About the author

Born on May 17, 1805, Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist, and sporting writer, usually published as R. S. Surtees. He trained in law, but he became much better known for writing about horses, hunting, and the manners of his time than for legal work.

Surtees helped found the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, and his most famous creation, Mr. Jorrocks, first appeared there in a series of comic sketches. That character — a cheerful, blunt Cockney grocer obsessed with fox hunting — made Surtees widely popular and led to books including Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities and Handley Cross. Britannica notes that he became one of the best-known novelists of the chase, admired for turning sporting life into comedy.

His stories are remembered not just for hunting scenes, but for their lively portraits of Victorian society, class, and eccentric personalities. Surtees died on March 16, 1864, and he remains a distinctive voice in 19th-century English fiction, especially for readers who enjoy humor, strong character writing, and a rich sense of place.
