About the author

Born in Perth on November 15, 1824, he spent his life closely tied to the city he wrote about. Sources describe him as an author, historian, and antiquary, and note that he was first apprenticed to the law before moving into journalism.

He became known for writing about Perth and Perthshire in particular, producing books on local history, genealogy, Scottish customs, and historical episodes. Among the works associated with him are Recreations of an Antiquary in Perthshire History and Genealogy, Curious Episodes in Scottish History, Sketches of the Olden Times in Perthshire, and the historical novel The Mosstrooper.

He married Catherine Campsie in 1866, and later biographical sources say the couple had a family. He died in Perth on October 11, 1903, leaving behind a body of work that still appeals to readers interested in Scotland’s local stories and forgotten details.
