About the author

Born in 1826 in Glasgow, Robert Rainy became one of the best-known ministers and theologians of the Free Church of Scotland. He studied at the University of Glasgow and later built his reputation as a preacher, teacher, and church leader.

Rainy taught church history at New College in Edinburgh and went on to play a major role in the public life of the Free Church. He is especially remembered for his long service as principal of New College and for his leadership in church affairs during a period of debate, growth, and change.

He also wrote on theology and religion, combining academic work with a strong practical influence on Scottish Presbyterian life. Rainy died in 1906, leaving behind a legacy as both a scholar and an important religious leader of his time.
