About the author

Born in Derbyshire in 1834, Robert Ottiwell Gifford-Bennet trained as a doctor rather than following his father into law. He became closely associated with Buxton and its spa culture, and his best-known book, Buxton and its Medicinal Waters, reflects both his medical background and his interest in making local health treatments understandable to visitors and patients.

The title page of that book identifies him as an M.D. and as Senior Acting Physician to the Devonshire Hospital and Buxton Bath Charity. That role helps explain the book’s practical tone: it is not just a celebration of Buxton, but a guide to how its famous waters were used in treatment during the late nineteenth century.

He died in 1902. Though not widely known today, his writing offers a useful window into Victorian medicine, regional history, and the long tradition of spa-based care in Britain.
