by Robert O. (Robert Orion) Vernon
Born in Alabama in 1912, Robert Orion Vernon built his career around geology and the natural history of the southeastern United States. He studied at Birmingham-Southern College, the University of Iowa, and Louisiana State University, and went on to become an important figure in Florida geology.
Vernon wrote both technical and public-facing works. His research included Florida stratigraphy, groundwater, and regional geology, while books and reports such as Florida Caverns State Park introduced readers to the state’s caves and landscapes in a clear, practical way. He also served in leadership roles with the Florida Geological Survey.
He died in 1974. Today, he is remembered both as a working geologist and as an author who helped readers see Florida’s underground and surface landscapes with more curiosity and understanding.
