About the author

Born in Falmouth in 1819, Robert Kemp Philp was an English journalist, author, and Chartist. Early in his career he was involved in radical politics, including the Chartist movement, before becoming better known as a prolific writer and editor of practical reference books for a broad readership.

His name is most often linked with Enquire Within Upon Everything, a wide-ranging household manual that became enormously popular in Victorian Britain. He also compiled and edited other useful works on domestic life, economy, and general knowledge, building a reputation for making information accessible and handy rather than academic.

Philp died in 1882. Although he is not as widely remembered today as some of his contemporaries, his books helped shape a very Victorian idea of reading: not just for entertainment, but for guidance, self-improvement, and everyday use.
