About the author

Born in London in 1855, Robert Forman Horton was educated at Shrewsbury School and New College, Oxford, where he earned high honors in classics and later became a fellow and lecturer. Although he was a Nonconformist, he also held an academic post at Oxford early in his career, an unusual path that helped establish his reputation as a gifted speaker and thinker.

Horton is best known for his long ministry at Lyndhurst Road Congregational Church in Hampstead, where he served for about fifty years. Alongside his work in the pulpit, he wrote extensively, producing sermons, biblical studies, and books on religion that reached a wide readership.

Remembered as both a clergyman and an author, he brought together scholarship, accessible prose, and a strong interest in public questions of faith. His long career made him a recognizable voice in English religious life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
