About the author

Born in Freeport, Maine, in 1850, Robert Franklin Pennell studied at Phillips Exeter Academy and then at Harvard, where he took a degree in classics. He built his career in education, eventually working in California schools and serving as principal of the Chico State Normal School.

Alongside his work as a teacher and administrator, he wrote accessible books on classical history and Latin, including Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and other school texts. His writing is remembered for turning Greek and Roman history into something straightforward and engaging for learners.

Pennell died in San Francisco in 1905. Though he is less widely known today than some popular historians, his books remain part of the long tradition of bringing the classical world to new generations of readers.
