About the author

Born on July 13, 1850, Robert Franklin Pennell was an American educator and classicist. He is remembered today for concise history books such as History of Greece and History of Rome from the Earliest Times down to 476 A.D., works written to help students and teachers navigate the ancient world with clarity.

Pennell spent his career in education, and that classroom experience shows in his writing. Rather than aiming for grand literary flourish, he focused on straightforward explanation, organization, and usefulness, which made his books especially suited to high schools and academies.

He died on October 22, 1905. Though not a household name now, his work reflects a period when scholars and teachers worked closely together to make classical history accessible to everyday readers and students.
